Inspired by my trip to Las Vegas, this painting is a vivid, semi-abstract interpretation of the landscape surrounding the city. It focuses on the dynamic meeting point of the arid desert and the intense man-made concrete jungle. The canvas divided diagonally and horizontally creates a sense of tension and motion. The yellow orange captures the intense heat and arid nature of Mojave Desert while the narrow, jagged band of bright lime green represents the highly artificial vitality, energy and man-made oasis of the Las Vegas strip itself. A prominent, irregular mass of deep black bleeds into both the orange and green fields powerfully representing the desert’s intrusion and the darkness that lurks beneath the city’s neon facade. The cool teal of the desert sky provides a necessary counterbalance to the intensity of the warm colors and the dense black mass.
