Perfect Forest Full of Imperfect Hearts is a painting about finding strength and a sense of home in the face of life’s challenges. Created as a special commission for a home in the Virginia mountains, the piece connects the beauty of the natural world with a very personal story of healing. While the bright, bold colors of the landscape represent a fresh start and the energy of a new home, the center of the painting holds a deeper meaning.
Using a palette knife, I created a thick, dark texture in the middle of the work that is shaped into a series of hearts. These “imperfect hearts” are a tribute to the human spirit and the reality of physical recovery, specifically honoring a journey through heart surgery. The title suggests that while we often look for perfection in nature, there is a different kind of beauty in our own scars and experiences. This painting celebrates the idea that a truly “perfect” life is one made whole by our resilience and the places where we find peace.
