The Wall 40×60 inches

Oil on canvas
My exploration of China was defined by two overwhelming visual and conceptual realities: the immovable weight of its history and the kinetic, prolific energy of its current global status. “THE WALL” is a painting born from this profound dissonance.

The central figure—the Great Wall of China—is rendered in a powerful, monolithic red, anchoring the composition in a sense of enduring history, immense effort, and ancient civilization. It stands as a monument to permanence and a national identity forged by monumental construction.

In stark and deliberate contrast, the surrounding composition is an abstract, cellular burst of highly saturated color. This landscape replaces organic nature with an industrial metaphor. Each brightly-hued segment is intended to evoke the dizzying, often ephemeral nature of modern commerce, specifically referencing the endless stream of colorful plastic goods, toys, and merchandise that are now central to China’s global manufacturing output.

The work invites the viewer to contemplate the relationship between past endurance and present-day economic proliferation, asking how a nation’s ancient identity navigates the demands and bright colors of the hyper-modern global marketplace.
